Local Eagle Scout Partners with VA WNY Healthcare System to Honor Veterans

On Monday, August 25, 2009, local Eagle Scouts will present VA Western New York Healthcare

System with the work they accomplished on the expansion of the Veterans Memorial Walkway at the

Jack H. Wisby Jr. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Program, located at the Batavia site,

222 Richmond Avenue. The presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m. behind Building 5.

John Baron, a Lackawanna teenager working to become an Eagle Scout, organized fellow members

of his troop to help expand the Veterans Memorial Walkway. The walkway was designed to pay

tribute to fallen veterans. This project will continue to allow patients to enjoy the park like setting while

seeking treatment at the VA Medical Center in Batavia.

John spent many hours planning, raising funds, and reaching out to local hardware and nursery

stores. Private donations from friends, family, and the Erie County American Legion made the project

possible, as well as donations from two local Home Depot stores and The Blasdell Nursery, who he

says were especially supportive of the project. Other Scouts, friends, and family members contributed

a cumulative total of approximately 250 hours to complete the walkway.

As part of the ceremony, John will be receiving his Eagle Scout Award. Everyone is invited to attend.

“Jonathon Cote Memorial Ride and Benefit”

Sunday August 16, 2009 - “Jonathon Cote Memorial Ride and Benefit”
Chris Cote is the brother of Army Veteran Jonathon Cote, the Western New
Yorker who was kidnapped while working for Crescent Security and then held
captive for 523 days. Jon was returned home to us on April after his body
was found. A group of his close friends and Chris enjoy riding, so they are
having a ride in Jonathon’s honor to raise money for American Veterans and
their families. The sign in for the benefit ride will start at the horseshoe
near Jon’s tree in front of Williamsville North High School at 10:30am to
11:30am. There will be a prayer at 11:30am and kickstands go up at 11:45am.
Each rider will receive a lapel pin and bracelet for participating. We plan
to leave the high school starting at 12pm on a scenic route that will take
us about 2.5 hours and will end at the Wilson Boat House, 57 Harbor Street,
Wilson, NY. There we will have a live band, food, and beverages as well as
raffles. We will be there until about 5:30 pm when the official benefit will
end. This benefit is being held in order to raise money for an annual
scholarship in Jonathon’s name for a selected student of Williamsville North
High School. Any of the money raised that is left over will be donated to a
charity, freedomisnotfree.com, which helps military personnel and their
families coping with the hardships they’ve been through and physical
sacrifices they’ve made. For more details go to Cyberspokes.com or contact
Chris Cote 716-907-1079.

VA Western New York Healthcare System Celebrates the Grand Opening of Springville VA Satellite Clinic

On Wednesday, August 12, 2009, VA Western New York Healthcare System will celebrate the grand opening of the Springville VA satellite site; located in the Springville Primary Care Center, 27 Franklin Street. The celebration will begin with a ceremony at 10:00 a.m., followed by an open house and benefits counseling from eligibility counselors from VA and New York State until 1:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. The satellite site is a community health center and an extension of the Lackawanna VA community based outpatient clinic and operated by Catholic Health.

The Clinic operates Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with free parking. Veterans now have the opportunity to get VA health care in southern Erie County so they don’t have to travel long distances to get their VA care, especially in inclement weather.

Primary care, behavioral health services and laboratory services are available on site, in addition to nutritional counseling, social work, and urgent care services. “Veterans in Springville expressed their interest to have VA health care closer to home. This satellite site offers them the opportunity to have VA care be their provider of choice,” said Dr. Bradford Mersereau, Primary Care Service Chief.
